Rapid Turnaround

We were approached by Burnley based Hurel Hispano to provide additional resources for urgent work they were performing on the thrust reverser assembly for a jet engine design for Honeywell.

Hurel Hispano were users of MSC.Nastran for Windows (supplied by ourselves), ensuring seamless interchange of models and output files between our two companies.

We took their existing finite element models and results and extracted load data for a wide variety of components within the thrust reverser assembly to perform hand calculations. We then supplied the calculations back to Hurel Hispano for incorporation into their overall report.

In addition to this work we performed a number of calculations on a weight-reduced version of the assembly to ensure the revised design still met the stress criteria dictated by the stringent Aerospace standards.

The figure top right is of the thrust reverser assembly in the deployed configuration with Von-Mises stress contours.

The figure below right shows one of the two main beams of the thrust reverser assembly.
As the main structural members, these take the highest loads and, as expected, need to be analysed with great care and accuracy.
